Static front page or latest posts?
Coming from an html background, I’ve always used a static front page for all my WordPress sites (and I’ve got 8 under my belt now…) but for this site I’ve decided to revert to having the latest posts instead.
Why? It really just occurred to me - and I am a little slow in reaching this conclusion I admit - the site is a blog not a standard website. First time visitors will head to the ‘About this site’ page if they can’t figure out what I’m about and regulars just want to view the latest posts. Duh. I said I was a little slow…
For a dual purpose site, ie: where the blog is just a part of the site, then a static page is a must to avoid confusing visitors. Anyway, it is one of the important considerations designers must ponder when beginning a new site. Navigation, layouts and a suitable theme are just as important of course.
I do tend to rush into site design and then figure out if I’ve got it right later - maybe for my ninth site I’ll take more time and get it right first time!
Happy blogging!

about time!
much better, like the new look
