I had to laugh when I saw the news this week that the Welsh town that banned the classic Monty Python movie Life of Brian 30 years ago has decided to screen it later this month. It is believed that the 1979 comedy, which critics said was blasphemous for telling the story of a Jewish man who is mistaken for Jesus and crucified, was banned by a committee of church leaders in the town.

The Life of Brian is now viewed as a classic and includes wonderful lines such as Brian’s mother’s line “He’s not the messiah – he’s a very naughty boy.”

Michael Palin and Terry Jones are expected to travel to Aberystwyth, in west Wales, for the movie screening on March 28 after being invited by the now mayor of the town, Sue Jones-Davies, herself a star of the film, who played Brian’s girlfriend (wasn’t her name ‘Sharon’ – it’s a common name for girlfriends and wives in the classic movies and shows of Monty Python?).

I found a great segment from the movie on YouTube that has the great line at the beginning that even mentions the mayor!

You will find some more YouTube videos linked to on this site from the movie – just put the word ‘Brian’ into the Search box to find them.

one of my all time favourite movies.
I never knew that Wales had banned the Life of Brian, I wonder if there’s any Welsh people who haven’t seen it, seeing as it’s been on DVD and Youtube for years?
