The latest blokeinadress has provoked a furious response from Aids campaigners on the first day of his visit to Africa when he declared that distributing condoms only ‘aggravates’ the problems inflicted by the condition.
Speaking as he flew from Rome to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, the Pope insisted that the way to confront the condition was through sexual monogamy. Aids, he said, “is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems”.
Apparently, Africa is vitally important to the Vatican because of its growing number of Roman Catholics. Within 15 years around a sixth of the world’s catholics, or 230 million people, are expected to be African. But perhaps not if African catholics continue to follow the church’s teachings…
Benedict has said that he would address the continent’s “grave problems and painful wounds” during his visit. ‘Address?’ What exactly does that mean? He is, in effect, simply dooming yet another generation of ‘his flock’ to a lingering. terrible death. That’s what this man means by ‘address’.
The grim reality is that more than 25 million have died on the continent from AIDS since it emerged in the 1980s - how many would have been saved if this man and those before him had shown some humanity?
Humanity: The quality of being humane; the kind feelings, dispositions, and sympathies of man; especially, a disposition to relieve persons or animals in distress, and to treat all creatures with kindness and tenderness.
Surely, any humane, caring person could see that by maintaining such an evil, uncaring religious position and demanding that all who belong to the religion MUST conform to it, is NOT the mark of a ‘good’ religion, if there is such a thing.
It is quite simply, no better than the worst kind of cult.
