Are atheists too negative?

Published by admin under atheism, personal musings

This is something that I’ve had pointed out to me a few times ie: ‘ok, so you don’t believe in anything, but what’s positive about being atheist?’.
I think that all of us need to ‘vent’ our frustrations and anger about the dangers of religion and the actions performed by some who believe they have ‘god on their side’ etc, but eventually we come to the position of just accepting that there will probably always be religions, so just accept it.

I can understand that, but I personally feel the need to educate. If not for the sake of those generations to come (including our own grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren), then for the current huge number of people who are in the ‘I’m a kind of believer’ category. They aren’t lost to rational thought and with a bit of encouragement can be helped to live a satisfying, normal life.

There’s some eloquent atheists out there

And here’s one of them. Sure, maybe not in the same league as Dawkins, but that’s being picky. The observations and arguments are great. I wish I could be so eloquent - and this atheist is so young! Sigh…

You know what really blows my mind about Creationists/IDers?

Does an intelligent theist exist?

I trawl the ‘net researching and often just plain exploring. I often wish there was an educated theist to be found that can postulate a convincing argument in support of his or her beliefs - if only to challenge the free-thinkers a little.

I never really expect to ever find any, but well, it’s worth continuing the quest!

Altruistic Atheists?

Published by admin under atheism, personal musings

Ok, enough videos for now. Time for some blogging.

I was watching a response to the ‘Blasphemy Challenge’ on a news show today (watch the Fox News channel one) and it struck me how christians really do love the idea that they are the only ones with altruistic attitudes and actions don’t they?

So, what do all these ‘ists terms mean anyway?

Published by admin under atheism

I couldn’t do any better than quote from Richard Dawkin’s book - The God Delusion.

“Let’s remind ourselves of the terminology. A theist believes in a supernatural intelligence who, in addition to his main work of creating the universe in the first place, is still around to oversee and influence the subsequent fate of his initial creation.

Yet another great Pat Codell video

Published by admin under atheism, comedy, video

Just love Pat. His no-nonsense style is a breath of fresh air.
This time he’s giving ‘polite atheists’ a hard time - good on ya Pat. Keep ‘em coming.

Sam Harris at Idea City ‘05 Video

Published by admin under atheism, creationist myths, video

This would have to be the best and clearest comment on the dangers of religion that I have seen. This lecture by Sam Harris, the author of The End Of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation is well worth the time (and bandwidth) to watch.

It’s my 50*something* birthday tomorrow.

Published by admin under atheism, personal musings

What they say about life beginning at 40 or 50 or whatever is actually true - well, for me anyway. I really enjoy being 50ish, mainly because all the thoughts and concepts that I spent the first part of my lifetime honing, polishing and refining have brought me to a currently peaceful and happy life experience.

Last year my atheistic beliefs finally crystallised into a viewpoint that actually has given me real peace.
