Comments are great, just don’t feed the trolls!

Published by admin under personal musings

As this site becomes more widely found it’s inevitable that the frequency of comments increases as well. That’s fine - discussion is valued and supported. But it’s probably time to lay down the guidelines for doing so - now, before things get ‘out of hand’.

What do atheists believe?

Published by admin under atheism, personal musings

I’ve recently added this blog to the Widgetbox network and when it came time to choose a category I decided on education rather than religion and not only because that one has pitifully few readers, but I digress.
Christian and other religious apologists try their best to portray atheists as ‘believing’ in atheism just as they believe in their god (or gods). But that’s just the point - atheists don’t believe in any supernatural power in the universe.

Do religious believers have mental issues?

Do I believe that religious believers have mental ‘issues’ - yes and here’s why.

I have an irrational fear of some things (what they are isn’t important - suffice to say they are icky/bug type things). Now, I know that my fears are irrational. I know that one of these things can’t hurt me in any way - but I probably couldn’t even touch a dead one. I’d be the first to admit that it’s a mental problem I have. Most of us have similar ‘issues’ - some worse than others and it’s what makes us human.

The passing of a legend

Published by admin under music, personal musings, video

I was saddened to hear yesterday about the death on Monday of Richard Wright, one of the founding members and keyboard magician of Pink Floyd. I’m laid low with a bad head cold today and spent the morning watching the Pulse DVD again at a good volume - as always, fantastic.

While watching, it struck me how moving and uplifting music can be - far more so than the feigned ‘rapturous adoration’ of their imaginary god in the sky that you see on the faces of those at Hillsong services and the like, not to mention the pathetic dross that they claim to be music…

New word to describe ‘christian society’ required

I find it bloody annoying how some Australians - church leaders and politicians mainly - describe this country as a ‘christian’ nation or a ‘christian’ society. Australia isn’t actually.

Our society, like most civilised Western democracies, is a secular society that tolerates religious belief.

I believe the word ’secular’ doesn’t describe our society well enough though - so I have come up with an alternative that I’ll run by you.

WYD : Sad, sad, sad

I didn’t intend to write anymore about the WYD (well, it should really be named WCYD - add the word ‘christian’ in there), but all the media coverage just got up my nose.

I mean, look, as was reported by the Seven network - 25% of Australians classify themselves as ‘christian’ and presumably this would include hundreds of thousands who just put that down on the census because they can’t be bothered putting ‘other’ or ‘none’ down, from some deep sense instilled into us all that we must be christian (or some other faith) to be ‘good citizens’. Oddly though, catholic church sites reckon that 25% of AUSTRALIANS are catholic… ok, so something is odd there. By my maths, I make it around 6% of the population may have been indoctrinated into the catholic religion - but I bet that far less are actually ‘practicing’.
